woman-looks-scared-holds-hands-over-mouth

Many of us are looking forward to the fall season and all of the fun activities that come along with it. However, spooky sounds coming from your air conditioner can really put a damper on festivities. There are some sounds that come from your air conditioner and are completely normal. Other sounds can be red flags that something major is wrong.

It’s important for you to be able to tell the difference between normal AC sounds and concerning AC sounds. That way you know when to give us a call to schedule air conditioning service in Shippensburg, PA. You can keep reading to learn more about five scary sounds that you don’t want to hear your air conditioner making.

Clicking Sounds

It’s actually completely normal to hear your air conditioner clicks sometimes. For example, if your air conditioner is turning on or turning off for a cooling cycle, then you will hear clicking as the compressor cycles on or off.

However, hearing persistent clicking that continues on without ceasing is a red flag that something is wrong with the compressor. Your cooling cycles may be too short or too long, putting strain on your air conditioner. Even if your home is comfortable, you definitely want to address persistent clicking sooner rather than later.

Rattling Sounds

If you hear a rattling sound coming from your air conditioner, there’s a good chance that you have a small component coming loose. It may be jiggling as your air conditioner operates, resulting in a rattling sound. However, it’s also possible to hear a rattling coming from your ductwork. Rattling is okay on occasion, but if you hear rattling that happens throughout a heating or cooling cycle, then there’s a good chance that your ductwork is loose and needs to be secured.

Grinding Sounds

Hearing a grinding sound coming from your air conditioner can be particularly frightening since the sound is very harsh. Grinding is often the result of two metal components scraping together instead of being well-lubricated and gliding together effortlessly. This is usually a fairly simple problem to fix since our team can re-lubricate the components and clear away any dust and dirt that has built up.

Hissing Sounds

The most common cause of hissing coming from your air conditioner is due to a refrigerant leak. Since refrigerant is under a lot of pressure in the lines, it can result in a hissing sound as it escapes. Our team can repair your refrigerant lines and then recharge the refrigerant to appropriate levels so there is enough refrigerant available for efficient cooling cycles. Otherwise, your air conditioner may be working against low refrigerant levels in an attempt to cool your home without success.

Squealing Sounds

A squealing sound can often be attributed to a belt that is loose and close to breaking. When a belt is not secure, it can make a squeaking or squealing sound as it goes around. This is an early sign that you want to address before the belt snaps completely, and knocks around inside of your air conditioner, potentially causing additional damage that will need to be repaired. If it turns out that a belt is not the cause of the squealing sound, we can troubleshoot your AC operation to get down to the source of the problem.
